HHC Volunteers “Untag” the Graffiti in Makakilo

HHC founder/president, Mike Gabbard, and a team of volunteers recently got rid of graffiti “eyesores” in the vicinity of Palailai St. and Makakilo Drive on December 31, 2005.

HHC volunteers had seen a Dec. 28th article in the West Oahu Current, which told the story of frustrated neighborhood residents complaining about a brick wall facing Makakilo Drive that had become an easy target for kids with spray paint. HHC quickly sprung into action to clean up the graffiti on New Year’s Eve.

Gabbard said, “I’m glad we were able to help out with this problem. HHC is dedicated to keeping our environment clean and graffiti is an especially bothersome nuisance. After getting a taste of untagging the ugly spray paint at the Omega Building in Kaneohe (off the H3) this past November, we were hooked.

If the taggers come back, we’ll be right behind them to once again wipe out the graffiti.”

Makakilo residents were very appreciative of HHC’s efforts. Many people driving by waved and yelled, “mahalos”, while the volunteers did the job. It was quite a challenge to find the right paint that would match the wall. HCC tried a couple of different options before settling on a paint that blended in quite well.
